Time to Start Thinking About the Move

With only 31 days until we open, it is time to start thinking about preparing for an audience. After our first stumble-through and a wonderful set change rehearsal, the cast is very excited about moving into our other premises to start working on the set, costumes, and props. Next week, we will start painting under the tutelage of none other than our creative set designer, Siobhan. The oversize building blocks are all built, the vinyl stick on letters will soon be ready to go, and eventually, our set will be vertical and secured into the braces. Unfortunately, one of the theatre's set builders was seriously injured in a fall this weekend, so we will be missing his presence for a while. We are all shocked by this unexpected turn of events, and fervently wish that he recovers quickly.

Dressing up the Bunnies

One of the biggest challenges with a play like this is costuming all the characters because we have to consider 8 trees, 10 bunnies, a few humans, and some very specific toys. Although we don't want it to look like Alice in Wonderland, our bunnies will be fully dressed. The first two images here are Alice images, the third, an adorable live bunny but the last one is an artist's idea of the nursery magic Fairy.  Her character is such a fine example of deus ex machina! But without the machine.:)

First Stumble-through this Saturday

All but one dance is choreographed and the set changes are almost complete.
So, all that's left is to put it all together from the very beginning to the final curtain call.
Once we finish Saturday's rehearsal, we can start polishing the show.

The Whole Play has been Blocked

Blocking is the term used when actors are moved around on stage. The play is blocked out step by step from beginning to end. As of this morning, we have finished blocking all the scenes in the play. Every actor now knows when he or she is entering or exiting, standing or sitting. It turns out that the toys disappear from the story after Skin Horse leaves! As a result, we had to alter our set design a bit and ask for a hinged panel in the back of the toy cupboard to allow the toys to exit in the dark. Today was a good day because the lighting designers were watching, the producer was there, one of the costume designers and the set designer. In addition to the cast, we had a full house. Very exciting times.
Possible Fairy Costume

Beginning of the tree costumes- they still need bark and branches.

Act 2 Almost Finished

This Friday, we will finish blocking Act 2, so Saturday morning, we can run all of Act 2. Sunday is the rabbit dance. Once we have the curtain call worked out, we will have the entire play sketched in.
We have two more weekends of rehearsals at the warehouse before we move into the theatre itself.
Learn your lines, because once we are in the theatre, no more scripts!
If looks could kill.....

Friday will be the only rehearsal this Weekend

Since this weekend is Thanksgiving, we will only have one rehearsal on Friday. We will look at pages 15 to 23. Please look at your script to see if you are needed. Our rehearsal will run from 7:00 to 9:30.
Now, we have two dances choreographed and the play is really beginning to take shape. Characters are emerging from the page and the incidental music adds so much to the wonderful monologues. Great job, everyone!
